Written in an appealing style, this book comes at the stories of these combatants from many angles. It brings home the individual suffering, the many ways to die in battle, the losses, the pain, all from the points of view of people who are easy to care about.. There is a surprising Italian connection, a n unlikely Princeton NJ connection. There's an intensely personal story of separated and reunited slaves, all based on diaries and recorded facts. The descriptions are tactile and odorous--I didn't ever realize that the soldiers wore their long johns under their woolen uniforms--in the baking heat of the summer. The sweat, the stink, the poisons, the general hell--unspeakable. It was painful and touching and very very real.
Great intertwined stories, very scholarly and complex, always accessible and engaging.
And I learned about places, people and civil war history that I hadn’t been aware of.

This was a fast read but full of depth and innuendos for a first time author. I am looking forward to the next book.
The writing is exquisite, at times poetic. The stories are compelling. I felt the Civil War and the battlefield like no other book I have ever read about war. It is said that wars will end only when movies and television can convey the odor of the battlefield. Pietro del Fabro has done just that in Savages Station. Savages Station, a page-turner par excellence, is a must read in today's militaristic environment. Whether the author realizes it or not, his novel can serve a higher purpose.
